Donated Makeover Home Mortgaged and in Foreclosure
According to the Associated Press today, one of the ABC TV's Extreme Makeover charity projects has proved to have ended up being mis-managed and now may be lost, after the tv show, well known Beazer Homes USA, and various other companies volunteered work and free materials to turn a couple's run down old house into a split level mansion.Located in Lake City, Georgia, the house was mortgaged by the family for $450,000 to fund a construction business. The funds are gone, the business never got off the ground, and the couple made a nice half-million dollars to squander off the good people who would have given them a better life.
In January 2005, Beazer Homes and the tv crew demolished the old rundown house with a faulty septic system and replaced it with a 4 bedroom rock-walled show-house, which boasted 4 fireplaces, a solarium, music room, plush office, and a 3 car garage.
As many as 1800 people volunteered time and materials to give the couple its dream home, and even sent them on a free Disney World vacation while the house was built.
The volunteers, which include Lake City's Mayor Willie Oswalt are furious, but have no recourse but to voice their disgust at the squandered opportunity.
The couple was chosen out of 15,000 applicants for the donated home.
One wonders how the Habitat for Humanity home that William Shatner's kidney stone paid for will turn out...:-) What a shame this is, though.
