"Staycations" is the new buzz-word going around now. What's it all about?

CNN Money describes a "Staycation" like this...

Staycations: Alternative to pricey, stressful travel

It might seem unusual that oil businessman David Mitchell would give up vacations for so-called staycations: taking time off from work to enjoy life at home.

But Mitchell, 42, has spent more than six years and $30,000 to develop his South Windsor, Connecticut, backyard into a custom-designed personal sanctuary, which includes a pool with a water slide, a lush flower garden and entertainment areas for dozens of visitors. In contrast to destination vacations, Mitchell feels like he gets "the most bang for my buck" staying home.

It seems like most of us who live in Myrtle Beach are transplants. We have family in other cities or states, and our vacations are often used to "go home" and see the folks. But there is one thing most of us don't have anymore, and that's the strong desire to go somewhere else when we get time off from work. Yes, I like to go to Las Vegas several times a year and try my luck, and many of my friends love to go to the mountains in the fall and see the turning leaves. But it's not like it was when we lived in an old industrial city in North Carolina, or worse - up north where it snows for three months out of the year and they have to wear a coat half the time.

My point here is to describe a lifestyle where you LIVE on vacation.
When you choose to relocate or retire in Myrtle Beach, you have it all. Usually about 8 months out of the year it's warm enough to wear a teeshirt and walk on the beach. Most everyone has a pool, access to a pool, or belongs to one of the fitness centers that have pools.

We have some of the best live entertainment at our many theatres year round. From the Alabama Theatre to the House of Blues, or one of the constant "festivals" we have, there is always something to do or explore in Myrtle Beach. Your "staycation" can consist of renting an off-season oceanfront condo for a third of what it costs in the summer. Maybe you just want to stay home and lay by the pool for 3 or 4 days.

Whatever you do, turn off the computer, get out of the house, and be a tourist for the day! Check out the new Market Commons and have lunch at PF Changs. Visit Brookgreen Gardens or the Wacatee Zoo and do dinner in Murrell's Inlet. Slide up to Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina for the Oyster Festival in October, and listen to the Embers sing their sweet beach music while you sample the local seafood.

If you live here, you never have to leave. If you live in a neighboring state, take a 3 day weekend and visit us instead of worrying about a week's vacation in Miami. Staycations will refresh your soul and make you feel better about returning to work, whether it's in your backyard paradise here in the Grand Strand, or you're making a short trip to relax and see the ocean for a few days.

But you know what? Living here is the best medicine for the soul that you'll ever find. I highly recommend it! Let us show you how reasonable it can be to buy a golf course condo in Little River, or a beautiful luxury townhome at Barefoot Resort. Buy a second home to make that "staycation" truly your own. You'll never regret it.
